ABOUT DUNCAN'S REFUGE
Mission Statement: To provide hope and temporary shelter with the goal of supporting individuals in order for them to break free from the cycle of poverty and homelessness by teaching them valuable life skills to achieve transition to permanent housing while remaining active in their recovery. Click Here for a Fact Sheet. The Story: His name was Don Duncan. He started his adult life like many of us do–marrying his high school sweetheart. But then, the usual storms came – job changes, fights over lack of money. To cope, he had a drink. And then another. Before he realized it, he was divorced with no home. He found a cave along the mountainside that he called home for a while until one day, someone offered him a helping hand. He grabbed it. He got sober. He turned his life around. We see too many people like Don Duncan in Northeastern Pennsylvania. It only takes one turn of fate and one bad decision to turn to alcohol or drugs. Then, individuals are addicted and homeless and stuck in a cycle that is extremely hard to break. We are asking you to help us change their future – to lend that helping hand that will turn a life around. To help someone rebuild their life and become once again a part of our community. That is what Duncan's Refuge, a program of New Roots, Inc., is all about. |
